PATHOGENS

Common pathogens for acute otitis media :

  • S. pneumoniae
  • Haemophilus influenzae (non-typeable)
  • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Group A Streptococcus
  • SARS-CoV-2
    • While not common, case reports suggest it can cause AOM without classic URI symptoms.

Potential pathgoens for chronic otitis media

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • S. aureus
  • Enterobacteriaceae
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis (consider if from regions with high rates of TB)
  • Non-tubercular mycobacteria (rare)
  • Aspergillusspecies
  • Candida species (rare, more likely found as a colonizer)
